The Acorn is a retreat-style recording studio located in a cabin high in the San Gabriel Mountains, about an 80-minute drive from downtown Los Angeles. Nestled among the towering pines of the Angeles National Forest and a 2-mile walk from the Pacific Crest Trail, The Acorn provides artists the opportunity to immerse themselves in a high-fidelity recording environment within a beautiful natural setting at an affordable cost.

The studio is outfitted with a hybird modern/vintage collection of instruments and recording equipment, including a variety of reel-to-reel tape machines for analog recording. Check out the full gear list here.

The studio’s daily rate is $300, which includes engineering and lodging.

I’ll be hosting an open studio weekend on February 24/25, when anyone is welcome to drop by for a tour and a host of other activities: RSVP here for more information.

“The Acorn— a hideaway to imagine this world’s disintegration into something more beautiful and strange. Adam is a skilled and curious engineer whose patience and expertise allowed us to step into a creative, easygoing place. It’s rare to find someone with a background in avant-garde music, engineering, and popular music, and rarer still to find a place so bucolic and serene to make records. Mountains, wildflowers, snow, a skatepark, and a beautiful space to play and experiment— the Acorn has it it all.”
-Evie Brown aka Katsy Pline

“I have been working closely with Adam since he was a staff engineer at Tiny Telephone in San Fransisco and Oakland. With curiosity, I followed Adam to his new studio in Wrightwood and I knew then that this was a place I would want to come back to again and again. It would be enough if Adam were a deeply competent engineer, transcendent musician, an excellent participant observer in the creative process, but the fact that he also has deep ties to the Salsa and Tamale vendors at the weekly farmer’s market in downtown Wrightwood makes his studio The Acorn simply a cut above the rest. Adam hosts with aplomb. He has at times insisted on being chef as well as engineer, lore-master as well as trail guide, which is all to say that a session at The Acorn will only ever be, at worst, a fantastic recording session. At best, it will be an unforgettable experience of Life, a savoring of the joys of creation, and a proper immersion into some of the best landscape that California offers.”
-Taft Mashburn aka Taft

“Recording with Adam at The Acorn was not just a good decision for my music. It was a good decision for my brain and heart. We ate oatmeal, played basketball, watched weird movies and looked at the stars. Of course the music, then, comes out full of love, reflecting its surroundings. Adam is a true professional, with an ear for quality and a desire to immerse himself and explore. Go spend some time in the mountains with him. You won’t regret it.”
-Nate Mendelsohn aka Market
